The environmental concerns resulting from the process of land occupation in the Amazon have led the Brazilian Federal Government to implement actions to combat and monitor the deforestation in the region over the last decades. In 2011, TerraClass Project was initiated, a partnership between Embrapa and INPE, with the objective of mapping and monitoring the land use and land cover in the deforested portion of the Legal Amazon, and thereby promoting a broader understanding of the current regional situation. The objective of this study was to compare the 2004 and 2014 mappings produced by TerraClass and to identify and quantify the major changes in land use and land cover occurred in the Northeast region of Mato Grosso, the State''s most recent agricultural frontier. The results have shown that in the period of ten years there were significant land use changes in the studied region. The thematic class that more expanded in ten years was Annual Agriculture, whose total area grew 263%, mainly occupying the pasturelands, an evidence of the process of change from the livestock production system to the intensive agricultural production system in the region. Although the region have lost approximately 4,000 square kilometers of forests over ten years, the results also indicated a sharp fall in deforestation in 2004 and 2014, in response to the actions of deforestation reduction in the Amazon implemented during the 2000s.
